Corin Cadence is the point of view character for the Arcane Ascension series of books.

Relations

Familial Relationships

Magnus Cadence: Father, a Citrine level Shaper and duelist. Their relationship is damaged due to the cruel training methods Magnus has employed against Corin since the disappearance of Tristan.
Laura Lyran: Mother, an Emerald level Swordmaster and Elementalist. She is a member of the Council of Lords for Valia, and is a climber who often climbs the Tortoise Spire in Dalenos.
Tristan Cadence: Elder Brother who mysteriously disappeared into the Serpent Spire four years before the beginning of "Sufficiently Advanced Magic". Corin hopes to find him, bring him home, and repair the damage to his broken family. Later revealed be to be the Voice of the Tower with a Sovereign attunement of at least Sunstone level.
Sera Cadence: Half-sister and Summoner (later ascended to Invoker). She is the closest of Corin's friends and allies.
Alaric Cadence: Great Grandfather who brought the Cadence family into the nobility, but overused his mind mana and damaged his mental faculties.

Friends and Associates

Patrick Wayland: Corin's friend and retainer. An Elementalist who is best with lighting, but is adept at both fire and air spells as well.
Marissa Callahan: A Guardian and one of Corin's closest friends and frequent sparring partner.
Jin Dalen: A mysterious foreign student, seemingly from Dalenos who is a business associate of Corin's, and a possible romantic interest. His attunement is initially unknown for mysterious reasons. Later revealed to be from East Edria with a Sunstone level Mesmer attunement.
Cecily Lambert: An Enchanter, noble, and formerly a possible romantic interest of Corin's, possibly even through an arranged marriage.
Keras Selyrian: A mysterious swordsman Corin meets during his judgement, later assigned to be Corin's guardian by the Visage Katashi. He also takes on a combat mentor role for Corin and Marissa.
Derek Hartigan: An Emerald level Soulblade who aids Corin in the Serpent Spire.
Elora Theas: An Emerald level Summoner and member of the Council of Lords in Valia alongside Corin's mother. Originally an antagonist, having aided in the kidnapping of the Visage Tenjin, she later aids Corin and his allies to the best of her abilities.
Sheridan Theas: An Emerald level Healer and Necromancer who helps Corin heal Sera and climbs the Serpent Spire with him in an attempt to find Tristan Cadence.
Vera Corrington: An Analyst from Caelford who happened to be in the Serpent Spire testing an artificial attunement when she was witness to the kidnapping of Tenjin. She is one of the prisoners that Corin releases during his Judgement, and later returns with Corin to Katashi.

Professors

Vellum: An Emerald level Enchanter and Abjurer of unknown level. She teaches Corin's Advanced Enchanting Class, and takes on the role of enchanting mentor for him after he has a couple of mishaps. She also aids him in learning the ins and outs of the patenting process, something they both dislike.
Johnathan Teft: A Citrine level Shaper and Lord in Valia. He is Corin's Dueling Class instructor and is well known for his eccentric ways. He was in a relationship with Lyras Orden.
Lyras Orden: A Wayfarer and Enchanter of unknown levels. Later revealed to also be a Whisper of Tenjin who had turned against the Visages and worked with Tristan Cadence and Elora Theas to kidnap Tenjin. She is last seen being taken prisoner by Katashi for her crimes.
Antonia Meltlake: An Emerald level Elementalist specializing in the use of Fire mana. She teaches Corin's --- Class. She later aids Corin and his companions when they climb the Tiger Spire. She is last seen re-entering the Tiger Spire for a Second Judgement, in an attempt to gain a second attunement. Derek Hartigan also reveals that she is his aunt, though she changed her family name from Hartigan to Meltlake for unspecified reasons.

Magic

Some of the known magic and abilities available to Corin.

Attunements & Crystal Marks

Enchanter: Enchanters can imbue items with mana to produce magical effects which differ based on the runes on the item.
Arbiter: An Attunement that specialized in purifying mana and transferring it into others.
Transcendence: A mark from the Crystal of Transcendence that grants Corin access to Transcendence mana.

Abilities

Enchanting: Corin is able to create permanent magic items. He is best known for making items that give him an advantage in combat against others, even to the point of "cheating".
Mana Sight: Corin can use his mental mana to view the shroud of a person or the mana of items in his view. As his attunement level has increased, his ability to discern specifics with this spell has as well.
Mana Enhancement: Corin is able to channel purified mana into others to increase, or replenish, their mana. He typically only does this with gray mana, as he doesn't have many overlapping mana types with others he uses it on.
Attunement Enhancement: Corin is able to, briefly, enhance the level of an attunement. So far he has only used this on himself.
Haste: Corin has demonstrated the ability to use transference mana to increase his speed. He has trouble controlling his movements due to his lack of perception mana.
Enhanced Calculation: He can increase his mental speed to quickly calculate or process information. He has started using this in conjunction with his Haste spell to gain some control of his movement.
Aura Manipulation: Corin has the ability to link to an enchanted item's aura and manipulate it in various ways. He has used it to enhance the cutting ability of weapons, project the aura as a ranged attack, or move the mana a shield sigil projects to increase the protection in a specific area.
Shroud Manipulation: Corin can reshape his shroud to his needs. He has demonstrated the ability to create daggers and swords from his shroud.

Magic Items

Selys Lyan: The greatest, and most dangerous, of Corin's magical items. Selys Lyan is a sabre of unknown origin that has the ability to project ice in various ways. The sword appears to be semi-sentient and responds to Corin's mental commands and desires. Corin later learns that a piece of the broken Sacred Sword Flowbreaker is contained within. It was given to him by the Voice of the Tower at the end of his Judgement.
The Jaden Box: A container that can store anything that can fit within its mouth and summon it back. It differs from most storage items in that it can store and retrieve items individually, as opposed to the normal everything in the same space and retrieved all at once. Additionally, it can be used to summon an individual as long as it has a full charge and the summoning individual has something linked to the individual being summoned. This item was created by the legendary pre-attunement era sorceress Wrynn Jaden, whom Keras Selyrian hopes to summon once the box has recharged fully.
Shield Sigil: A small silver device that students at Lorian Heights Academy are required to keep on at all times, particularly if they are involved in any combat classes. It creates a shield that protects from most attacks, showing cracks as it absorbs more damage and runs out of the mana that powers it.
Phoenix Sigil: Corin makes several of these, improving on their design as he progresses. Originally they just created a second shield outside that created by the Shield Sigil, but he later added a regeneration function to them, as well as a greater mana capacity so they could last longer.
Transference Sword: A sabre that Corin enchanted while he was forbidden to take Selys Lyann into tests or training. In place of the ice mana and abilities of Selys Lyan, the transference sword used transference mana to enhance its cutting ability or project cutting attacks at opponents. Corin gives it to a spirit during his trial with the Transcendence Crystal.
Demi Gauntlet: A small gauntlet that Corin enchants to act similarly to a dueling cane, but in addition to the normal gray mana, it can fire transference mana, granting it some more versatility in its use.
Mana Watch: Due to his crippling fear of overusing the mana in his mind, Corin creates the mana watch to show a person's current mana level over their normal capacity. He makes three of these, two of which he gives to the Theas siblings, and the third he eventually gives to Cecily Lambert to prove to himself he no longer needs it to move forward.
