Therin, sometimes Therin Whitestone, was an incredibly powerful war hero and sword wielder.

Therin had rough-cut black hair and a jagged scar that traced from below her right eye to her chin. She wore six swords, including the True Blade.

In our terminology, Therin would be a transgender woman. Therin never transitioned during her life due to societal prejudices and her own fear. Because of this, visions of her depict her as a male, although the Smiling Sword Saint that Lien trains under manifests as her true self, a woman. This is also why the echo Lien fights against, Thane, looks like a boy.
